Dr. Ford received her Doctorate in Counselor Education, with a specialization in Clinical Psychology, from the University of Virginia in 1996. Dr. Ford is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor with the North Carolina Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors (License Number 3292) and a Nationally Certified Counselor (Certificate Number 54463).
Dr. Ford was an Assistant Professor at Hofstra University where she taught Master's students in counseling and developed their first Counseling Center for counselors in training. She has also taught as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Virginia, UNC in Chapel Hill, NC State University, and Montreat College. She continues to provide individual supervision to counselors seeking Licensure.
Dr. Ford has over twenty years of experience providing individual, group and family psychotherapy to adolescents and adults. Dr. Ford began her work as a counselor in the schools, providing individual and group counseling to adolescents as well as parent consultation. While completing her doctorate, she worked for several years as the lead therapist and clinical case manager of the adolescent day treatment program in a psychiatric hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Dr. Ford has also worked at the University of Virginia's Counseling Center providing individual therapy to young adults in the community.
In 1998, Dr. Ford joined NC Neuropsychiatry, a leading Neuropsychiatric practice in Chapel Hill, NC. During her nine years at this practice, Dr. Ford established herself as a specialist in treating patients who are struggling with moderate to severe mood and anxiety disorders as well as individuals who have experienced a mild to moderate traumatic brain injury. Dr. Ford has always balanced her practice with persons who have more challenging issues as well as persons dealing with common developmental issues.
Dr. Ford played an integral part in the development of NC Neuropsychiatry's Day Treatment Program in Chapel Hill. For six years, she remained the lead individual and family therapist in the program in addition to providing clinical case management and the coordination of all clinical services. The Day Treatment Program was designed for adults dealing with acquired brain injury and/or chronic mental illness. The Day Treatment Program provided comprehensive treatment to assist individuals with medication stabilization, intensive individual psychotherapy and family therapy, cognitive remediation and community reintegration.
In January, 2008 Dr. Ford established her own clinical practice, Triangle Behavioral Health, PLLC. Dr. Ford continues to provide comprehensive individual and family services to persons with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and substance abuse problems. Furthermore, she remains committed to the highest quality care, comprehensive testing and evaluations, communication among all treatment providers (medical and non medical), and advocating for diverse community resources for patients.
Dr. Ford specializes in working with college students and adults who are experiencing problems with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, or the psychological effects of a concussion or traumatic brain injury. Some common diagnoses of her treatment population include Major Depression and Bipolar I and II Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, PTSD, Adjustment Disorders, and Substance Abuse.
Individual therapy begins from a psychodynamic orientation which values developing trust, a sense of security, and empathic understanding. Dr. Ford helps individuals to gain insight into the origins of their presenting problems, the contributing factors, and the best course of action to alleviate their distress. Dr. Ford utilizes cognitive behavioral techniques to assist the individual in changing irrational, intrusive and self destructive thought patterns; developing healthy behavior patterns; learning effective coping strategies; and assuming greater control of their own lives.
